It was the mid 20th century when substantial numbers of Magpie Geese, Anseranas semipalmata, were last seen in southern Australia, and today these large birds, thanks to the draining of wetlands, hunting and the impact of droughts, are an endangered species in Victoria and South Australia, and are regarded as being vulnerable in New South Wales.
Attempts to reintroduce the birds into some areas have had minimal success, but fortunately they’re thriving in more northerly parts of the continent where flocks of hundreds and even thousands of birds are not an uncommon sight.
