outback landscape

colourful outback landscape with red soil, blue sky, spinifex grass and other vegetation in queensland australia

Outback landscape IMG 9159A - Much of the vegetation in outback Australia struggles to survive when drought strikes, but with vivid red sandy soil and a dazzling blue sky the landscape is never drab and dull. The plant in the foreground is spinifex grass, a spiny species of Triodia that is often referred to as 'porcupine grass' or 'tussock grass'. It's certainly unpleasant to a human's touch, but for the small reptiles and mammals that are at home in this arid environment, spinifex provides a safe refuge from predators.
